Join us for a Rare Hands-On Beekeeping Experience
Want to experience something different?….really different.
Learn about the intriguing world of honey bees in a way that few get to experience: through the hands-on exploration of an active, living beehive!
On our guided beehive tour, you’ll suit up in protective beekeeping gear, light a bee smoker, and step into the fascinating, organised chaos of a real working beehive.
Held at the beautiful Rivers of Yarrambat, a garden and wellness centre just 45 minutes north-east of Melbourne’s CBD, this is a rare chance to experience beekeeping in one of Victoria’s most peaceful outdoor settings.
Led by Nathan Stewart, a Doreen-based beekeeper, this hands-on experience gives you a genuine look inside the world of honey bees. You’ll learn how a colony works, what the bees are doing inside the hive, how honey is made, and why these tiny creatures matter so much to our gardens, farms and food supply.
It’s calm, safe, surprising and genuinely unforgettable.
Tours run throughout Spring, Summer and early Autumn only. They are unique, very popular, and bookings are essential. Most sessions sell out well in advance, so it’s worth booking early if you’d like to join us.
Perfect for curious adults, families, nature lovers, garden lovers, and anyone who wants to experience something completely different.
TOUR INFORMATION
What Happens On The Day

1. Arrive At Rivers Of Yarrambat
We’ll meet at the beautiful Rivers of Yarrambat, a garden and wellness centre surrounded by plants, flowers, café culture and fresh country air.
2. Learn How A Hive Works
Before we open the hive, Nathan will run a relaxed 20–30 minute education session explaining how honey bees live, work and organise themselves.
3. Meet The Three Castes Of Bees
You’ll learn the difference between worker bees, drones and the queen, and start to understand the remarkable structure of a real honey bee colony.
4. Suit Up Like A Beekeeper
You’ll be fitted with protective beekeeping gear, including a bee suit and gloves, so you can safely step closer to the hive.
5. Light The Smoker
Nathan will show you how beekeepers use a smoker to help keep the bees calm during a hive inspection.
6. Open A Real Working Hive
With Nathan guiding you, you’ll get close to the bees, inspect frames, learn what you’re seeing, and experience the hive from the beekeeper’s perspective.
7. Taste Raw Honey From The Hive
After the hive inspection, you’ll sample raw honey and enjoy a refreshing honey tonic drink.
8. Receive Photos From The Experience
We take photos of guests who would like them during the tour and send them through afterwards, so you can be famous on Instagram by nightfall ;-)
9. Enjoy Your Hamper And Explore Rivers
To finish, adult guests receive a takeaway lunch hamper, while children receive a Children’s Graze Box. After the tour, you’re free to browse the gift shop, feed the ducks, spot a tortoise in the dam, wander through the garden centre, or meet friends and family for coffee, dessert or a chat in the café or nearby seating areas. Café bookings are recommended.

Weather
Even though we only run our Tours over the warmer months of the year, Melbourne's weather can be notoriously unpredictable and even the forecast can change quickly. If the weather is looking like being below 18 degrees, heavy rain or storms we may need to postpone the Tour. In the unusual event that this occurs we will contact you the day before and arrange to reschedule or refund your booking as required.

Give Someone An Experience They’ll Actually Remember
Some gifts are opened, used and forgotten.
This one gets talked about.
A Maya’Xala Honey beehive tour gift voucher gives someone the chance to suit up, open a real hive, taste raw honey, enjoy a honey tonic drink, receive photos from the day, and explore the hidden world of honey bees up close.
Held at the beautiful Rivers of Yarrambat, the experience also includes a takeaway lunch hamper, so guests can browse the gardens, nursery and café area after the tour at their own pace.
It’s perfect for birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, couples, families, garden lovers, nature lovers, and people who already have enough “stuff”.
Tours run in Spring and Summer only, so gift vouchers are a beautiful way to give someone something to look forward to.
